With millions being duped off of their hard earned money, a UK based hacker, who goes by the name Jim Browning thought of getting back to scammers in India. What did he do? Now, although what Browning did was illegal, he says he wanted to get back at scammers and do his part in stopping them. He screened every movement of the scammers for months and downloaded about 70, phone calls in order to get back at the scammers. Online dating scams have claimed an estimated , victims in the UK. This study demonstrates how research by the Unit has substantially increased understanding and public awareness of this relatively new and under-reported crime, and helped the police and the online dating industry to address it more effectively. This research was the first significant academic work on a serious mass-marketing fraud known as the Online Dating Romance Scam. This type of fraud involves international, organised criminal gangs who target users of dating websites and social networking sites, creating fake profiles and trying to extract large sums of money from victims. Professor T. Buchanan University of Westminster was the co-investigator. The first project included both quantitative and qualitative studies, involving the surveying and interviewing of victims and conducting an analysis of their online accounts.

Jim Browning is the Internet alias of a Northern Ireland based YouTuber and grey hat hacker whose content primarily focuses on scambaiting. Browning carries out investigative scam baits in which he infiltrates computer networks run by technical support scammers and fraudsters posing as US IRS agents and random aliases through the use of remote access software and social engineering. Browning was featured in a March episode of the British documentary series Panorama , in which a large-scale technical support scamming operation was infiltrated and extensively documented by Browning and fellow YouTuber Karl Rock.
